Suspected Ebola Case in Scotland Ruled Out After Patient Tests Negative

LONDON: A patient admitted to a major hospital in Glasgow with suspected Ebola has tested negative for the virus, easing concerns after precautionary infection control measures were implemented, according to Public Health Scotland.

The individual was admitted to the acute receiving unit at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in the early hours of Tuesday, prompting the temporary closure of part of the facility while health authorities carried out precautionary testing.

Late on Tuesday, officials confirmed that the test result was negative and stressed that there are currently no confirmed cases of Ebola in Scotland. Public Health Scotland said the risk to the general public remains low and that standard infection prevention and control procedures were followed throughout the incident.

Health authorities noted that well-established protocols are in place to assess and test travellers arriving in the United Kingdom from regions affected by Ebola. Public Health Scotland is working closely with the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) to monitor potential risks and ensure appropriate response measures.

Officials also confirmed that, where necessary, contact tracing and precautionary clinical assessments would be undertaken. The UKHSA’s Returning Workers Scheme has been activated to monitor individuals travelling from Ebola-affected areas for work-related purposes.

The development comes amid ongoing Ebola outbreaks in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and neighbouring Uganda. UK authorities have reiterated their commitment to supporting international efforts to contain the disease, including financial assistance and the deployment of public health experts to assist the World Health Organization’s response in affected regions.
