UK to Announce New Sanctions Targeting Russia’s Shadow Fleet at G7 Summit

London: The United Kingdom is expected to unveil new sanctions on Tuesday aimed at Russia’s so-called “shadow fleet” and financial networks used to bypass Western restrictions, according to a government statement released ahead of the G7 summit in France.

Full details of the measures are expected to be announced as Prime Minister Keir Starmer meets fellow world leaders at the gathering in France.

The government said the sanctions will “directly target Russia’s illicit shadow fleet and finance networks used to circumvent Western sanctions and support military procurement,” including vessels involved in transporting sanctioned Russian liquefied natural gas.

The move comes amid heightened enforcement actions against maritime evasion networks linked to Russia, particularly those used to sustain energy exports and military supply chains under international sanctions regimes.

In a related development, British forces recently conducted a rare interception operation in which commandos boarded a sanctioned Russian-linked oil tanker in the English Channel, underscoring increased enforcement activity at sea.

Separately, the UK government announced £210 million ($282 million) in support through UK Export Finance for Urenco to supply enriched uranium to Ukraine’s state nuclear operator Energoatom. Officials said the financing is intended to strengthen Ukraine’s energy security amid the ongoing war.

The announcements come as G7 leaders gather in France, where sanctions enforcement, energy security, and continued support for Ukraine are expected to be key topics of discussion.
