Ukrainian Drone Strike on St. Petersburg Casts Shadow Over Putin’s Economic Forum

St. Petersburg: A major Ukrainian drone strike on the outskirts of St. Petersburg has sent a large plume of smoke over the city skyline, disrupting air traffic and security operations just as Russian President Vladimir Putin prepared to attend the annual St. Petersburg International Economic Forum.

The attack, which reportedly set an oil terminal ablaze and targeted a naval facility near Russia’s second-largest city, underscored Ukraine’s expanding capability to strike deep inside Russian territory, raising fresh concerns over the security of even heavily fortified urban centers.

Authorities temporarily suspended or diverted multiple flights at St. Petersburg’s airport and restricted mobile internet services in an effort to reduce the risk of further drone coordination. The incident occurred one day before the high-profile economic forum, an event often used by the Kremlin to promote investment and showcase Russia’s economic performance.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov confirmed ongoing military operations, stating that Russian forces were acting to prevent similar attacks, while also indicating continued strikes on Ukrainian targets.

In recent days, Ukrainian forces have intensified drone and missile operations, including a major strike on Kyiv that resulted in significant casualties, according to local reports. Russia, in turn, has escalated its own aerial bombardments across Ukraine.

The latest attack also hit the Kronstadt naval base in the Gulf of Finland, a historic site associated with Russia’s Baltic Fleet, further highlighting vulnerabilities in strategic military infrastructure near Gulf of Finland.

Despite the escalation, Russia is proceeding with the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, where officials aim to highlight economic resilience and attract foreign investment. Delegations from countries including Saudi Arabia, Uzbekistan, Tanzania, and China are attending, reflecting Moscow’s continued outreach beyond Western partners following the outbreak of the war in 2022.

However, analysts note that the economic outlook remains under pressure, with rising fiscal strain, higher taxes, and increased domestic borrowing amid sustained wartime expenditures.

The strike on St. Petersburg—Russia’s symbolic and historical “northern capital”—has added to growing concerns over the widening geographic reach of the conflict and its impact on Russia’s domestic stability.
