USS Abraham Lincoln Crew Arrives in Thailand for Rest After Lengthy Middle East Deployment

PATTAYA: Thousands of U.S. sailors and Marines from the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln have arrived in Thailand’s resort city of Pattaya for rest and recreation following an extended deployment in the Middle East.

The carrier docked at Laem Chabang port in eastern Thailand on Wednesday after spending nearly nine months at sea as part of U.S. military operations against Iran. The deployment lasted 286 days, including a record-setting period of 264 consecutive days at sea, according to the Associated Press.

Approximately 5,000 personnel aboard the carrier and its accompanying strike group are taking a break in Pattaya, with sailors seen arriving at hotels and visiting local shops and other attractions.

The prolonged deployment has placed considerable strain on the crew. Reports have raised concerns over sailors’ mental health, shortages of food and other supplies, and difficult living conditions during the lengthy mission. The U.S. Navy has disputed or downplayed some of the more serious allegations.

The arrival has also attracted significant attention in Pattaya, a major Thai tourism destination with a long association with visiting U.S. military personnel. Local businesses are hoping the influx of thousands of service members will provide a boost to the tourism and hospitality sectors.

The crew’s visit is expected to continue through September 6, after which the carrier is scheduled to begin preparations for its return to the United States. The USS Abraham Lincoln’s deployment has been among the longest in recent U.S. naval operations, underscoring the operational demands placed on American forces amid the conflict with Iran.
