LONDON: More than 2,700 deaths in England and Wales have been linked to the extreme heatwaves experienced during May and June 2026, according to a new scientific study that underscores the growing public health risks posed by climate change.
The analysis, conducted by researchers from leading UK institutions, estimates that approximately 42 percent of the heat-related deaths were attributable to additional warming caused by human-induced climate change, primarily driven by the burning of fossil fuels.
Researchers found that the prolonged periods of unusually high temperatures significantly increased mortality, with older adults and individuals suffering from underlying health conditions among the most vulnerable to the extreme heat. The study emphasized that climate change has intensified the severity and frequency of heatwaves, making such deadly events increasingly likely.
The findings come amid broader concerns over the impact of extreme weather across Europe. Separate mortality data indicate that a record-breaking late-June heatwave contributed to more than 10,000 excess deaths across the continent, reinforcing warnings from scientists that rising global temperatures are placing millions of people at greater risk.
Experts have urged governments to strengthen heat adaptation measures, including improving public health preparedness, expanding early warning systems, and investing in climate resilience to protect vulnerable communities as extreme heat events become more frequent.
