Norway’s King Harald V Dies at 89 as Crown Prince Haakon Assumes Throne

OSLO: Norway’s King Harald V has died at the age of 89, bringing an end to a 33-year reign during which he became one of the country’s most respected and popular modern monarchs. He is succeeded by his son, Crown Prince Haakon, who has ascended the throne as King Haakon VIII.

The Royal Palace said Harald died peacefully at Oslo University Hospital on Friday morning. He had been hospitalized since August 17 after being diagnosed with haemolytic anaemia and had recently suffered a serious deterioration in his health.

Harald became king in 1991 following the death of his father, King Olav V. During his reign, he played a prominent role in modernizing Norway’s monarchy and was widely praised for his humility, openness and commitment to national unity.

The king was particularly admired for his leadership during periods of national crisis. Following the 2011 terrorist attacks in Norway, he delivered an emotional address emphasizing tolerance, solidarity and the strength of democratic values. He also became known for advocating diversity and inclusion, including support for LGBTQ+ rights.

His death comes at a challenging moment for the Norwegian royal family. The succession places King Haakon VIII and his wife, Mette-Marit, at the center of renewed public scrutiny. Mette-Marit has faced criticism over her past correspondence and association with Jeffrey Epstein, while her son, Marius Borg Høiby, has also been the subject of serious criminal proceedings.

The controversies have contributed to declining public support for the monarchy and are expected to present an early challenge for the new king as he seeks to maintain public confidence in the institution.

Haakon, 53, has already assumed the responsibilities of the monarchy on several occasions in recent years as his father’s health declined. His accession was immediate following Harald’s death, and he is expected to formally address the government and parliament as part of the transition.

King Harald leaves behind a legacy of modernization, national unity and a close connection with the Norwegian public. His funeral is expected to be followed by a period of national mourning, while the country begins a new chapter under King Haakon VIII.
