King Charles to Make History as First British Monarch to Publicly Reveal Personal Tax Bill

LONDON – King Charles III is set to become the first British monarch to publicly disclose his personal tax payments, marking a historic step toward greater transparency in royal finances, Buckingham Palace has announced. The disclosure will be included in the Royal Family’s annual financial reports due to be released later this week.

According to Buckingham Palace, the decision was made at the King’s own request as part of ongoing efforts to modernize the monarchy and improve public understanding of royal accountability. Officials said the move reflects the royal household’s commitment to enhancing transparency and accessibility regarding its financial affairs.

The published figures will reveal the total amount of tax paid by King Charles during the 2024–25 financial year. The monarch voluntarily pays income tax on his private income and capital gains tax on relevant assets under arrangements agreed with the British government. His income includes earnings from private estates such as Balmoral and Sandringham, investments, savings, and revenue from the Duchy of Lancaster estate.

The Duchy of Lancaster, a portfolio of land, investments, and commercial properties that provides private income to the sovereign, generated approximately £26.8 million during the 2024–25 financial year. The King’s tax details are expected to be published annually going forward.

The announcement comes amid broader efforts by Buckingham Palace to provide greater insight into royal finances. Additional reports on the Sovereign Grant and other royal financial arrangements will also be released, with palace officials stating that the monarchy continues to “modernise and evolve” in line with public expectations.
