BIRMINGHAM: British sprinters Amy Hunt and Dina Asher-Smith made history at the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham, with Hunt becoming the first athlete to win four gold medals at a single edition of the championships and Asher-Smith becoming the most decorated athlete in the event’s 92-year history.
Hunt completed her unprecedented golden haul by helping Britain win the mixed 4×100 metres relay. The British quartet recorded a European record of 39.97 seconds, adding to Hunt’s earlier victories in the individual 100 metres, 200 metres and women’s 4×100 metres relay.
Asher-Smith, meanwhile, collected her 11th European Championships medal, including eight golds, after contributing to Britain’s relay success. The achievement moved her to the top of the all-time medal standings at the continental championships.
Britain enjoyed a highly successful final day of competition, with Georgia Hunter Bell also claiming gold in the women’s 1500 metres. Matthew Hudson-Smith further strengthened Britain’s record book by becoming the most decorated male athlete in European Championships history, taking his career medal tally to nine after winning silver in the men’s 4×400 metres relay.
Despite Britain’s impressive performance, Italy finished top of the overall medal table with 10 gold medals and 22 medals in total, while Britain ended the championships second with nine golds and 19 medals.
Sweden’s Armand Duplantis also added to the championships’ record-breaking performances, securing his fourth consecutive European pole-vault title with a championship-record clearance of 6.15 metres.
