LONDON: Players and supporters of Everton and Ipswich Town paid tribute to three-year-old Noah Woods during their Premier League match in Liverpool following the toddler’s death in Suffolk earlier this week.
Players from both teams wore black armbands during Saturday’s match, while a photograph of Noah was displayed on the stadium’s large screen before kick-off. Three minutes after the match began, supporters of both clubs stood and applauded in his memory.
Noah went missing on Tuesday afternoon after becoming separated from a relative at a playground in Brantham, Suffolk. Around 1,300 members of the public joined the search for the child before police divers recovered a body from a nearby lake the following day.
Suffolk Police said the recovered body was formally identified as Noah and that his death was not being treated as suspicious. The force said several inquiries remained to be completed before a file is submitted to the coroner.
Ipswich Town players and officials also joined efforts to support Noah’s family. Club captain Dara O’Shea and goalkeeper Christian Walton were among a delegation that laid flowers at the playground where Noah disappeared.
Ipswich Town defender Leif Davis, who participated in the search for Noah, donated £2,000 to a fundraising appeal established to support the family. By Saturday evening, the appeal had raised more than £100,000 from over 6,000 contributors.
Noah’s father, Rhys Woods, expressed gratitude to the local community for its efforts to find his son, describing the family as devastated by the loss.
The widespread response from football supporters and the local community has provided further support for the family as police continue their inquiries into the circumstances surrounding Noah’s death.
