NEW DELHI: A youth-driven protest movement powered by Instagram has emerged as an unexpected political challenge to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, raising concerns for the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ahead of crucial state elections.
The movement, led by the self-styled “Cockroach Janta Party” (CJP), gained nationwide attention after protests erupted over alleged irregularities in a major medical entrance examination. The campaign rapidly expanded on social media, attracting millions of followers and amplifying broader concerns among young Indians over unemployment, education, and economic opportunities.
The protests culminated in the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, marking a rare political concession by the government after weeks of sustained demonstrations. The development has been widely viewed as a significant victory for the youth-led movement, whose supporters have openly criticized the government through online campaigns, satire, and public demonstrations.
Political analysts say the unrest reflects a growing shift in the priorities of India’s younger generation, which appears increasingly focused on employment prospects, transparency, and government accountability rather than traditional electoral considerations. They note that the movement has exposed the ruling party’s challenges in connecting with digitally engaged Gen Z voters.
Prime Minister Modi has sought to engage younger audiences through social media, including a recent Instagram video addressing public concerns. However, observers suggest the outreach has done little to quell growing dissatisfaction among sections of the country’s youth.
While the Cockroach Janta Party has not transformed into a formal political party, analysts believe its rapid rise underscores the increasing influence of social media in shaping India’s political discourse and could have implications for future elections, including the next general election.
