UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham Pledges Major Social Care Reform Before Next General Election

LONDON: UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham has pledged to use his political capital to overhaul England’s social care system, warning that meaningful reform is essential to prevent further strain on the National Health Service (NHS) and improve care for vulnerable people.

In his first full interview since taking office, Burnham described social care reform as one of his government’s highest priorities, saying he was determined to deliver substantial progress before the next general election. He said the current system is unsustainable and argued that strengthening social care is critical to easing pressure on hospitals and reducing NHS waiting times.

Burnham said his commitment is driven in part by personal experience, recalling his father’s battle with Alzheimer’s disease and the challenges his family faced navigating the care system. While acknowledging that comprehensive reform will take time, he expressed confidence that significant improvements can be achieved during the current parliamentary term.

The prime minister also outlined plans to reform the welfare system, emphasizing that government support should be accompanied by greater opportunities for employment and training. He stressed that welfare changes should not stigmatize benefit recipients, particularly young people, many of whom require improved mental health services and stronger pathways into work.

Burnham’s government is expected to launch a broader review of social care funding and delivery as part of its long-term objective of creating a more sustainable and accessible care system.
