LONDON: London has formally submitted its final bid to host the 2029 World Athletics Championships, with organizers projecting that the prestigious global athletics event could generate more than £400 million ($530 million) in combined economic and social benefits.
The bid is being led by UK Athletics, the Mayor of London and Athletic Ventures, a partnership involving UK Athletics, the Great Run Company and London Marathon Events. The organizers have presented the proposal as part of a broader strategy to strengthen London’s position as a leading international sporting destination.
London has extensive experience staging major athletics events. The capital hosted the 2017 World Athletics Championships at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, following the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. The 2017 championships attracted large crowds and were widely regarded as a successful international sporting event.
Organizers estimate that bringing the 2029 championships back to London could deliver more than £400 million in economic and social value. The projected benefits include increased tourism, employment, business activity and opportunities to encourage greater participation in athletics.
The bid also comes as Britain seeks to build on its record of hosting major international sporting competitions. Birmingham is scheduled to host the 2026 European Athletics Championships, while London remains one of the world’s most experienced cities for large-scale sporting events.
UK Athletics officials have expressed confidence in the city’s ability to deliver another successful World Championships, pointing to the legacy of London 2017 and the continued popularity of athletics and mass-participation events in the capital.
A decision on the host city for the 2029 World Athletics Championships will be made by World Athletics following its assessment of the competing bids.
If successful, London would once again welcome the world’s leading track and field athletes, further strengthening its reputation as a global centre for international sport.
