Macron Visits London as UK and France Highlight Historic Ties Through Bayeux Tapestry

LONDON: French President Emmanuel Macron arrived in London on Wednesday for meetings with newly appointed British Prime Minister Andy Burnham and a private viewing of the historic Bayeux Tapestry alongside King Charles III and Queen Camilla.

The 70-metre (230-foot) tapestry, which dates back nearly 1,000 years, depicts the Norman conquest of England in 1066 and is regarded as an important symbol of the shared history and longstanding relationship between Britain and France.

The British Museum is hosting the tapestry under a 10-month loan from France. The exhibition is scheduled to open to the public on September 10 and run until July 2027. The artifact was transported from Bayeux in Normandy to London in July through a tightly controlled security operation, marking its first return to British soil in centuries.

Macron and Burnham are also expected to hold bilateral discussions covering issues including migration across the English Channel, the conflicts in Ukraine and Iran, as well as economic relations and cooperation between Britain and the European Union. Burnham has made closer ties with the EU a key element of his government’s foreign and economic policy.

The French president’s visit is being viewed as an important diplomatic and cultural moment for relations between London and Paris. Burnham described the tapestry’s return to Britain as a landmark moment in the history of the two nations and said it offered an opportunity to celebrate their shared heritage while strengthening bilateral relations.

The exhibition also forms part of a reciprocal cultural exchange, with Britain lending important historical artifacts to institutions in Normandy. The arrangement was finalized during Macron’s state visit to Britain in 2025 and reflects efforts by both countries to deepen cultural and political cooperation following years of tensions linked to Britain’s departure from the European Union.

The visit by Macron, accompanied by his wife Brigitte Macron, and the participation of the British monarch and prime minister underline the cultural significance attached to the tapestry and its role in highlighting the intertwined histories of the United Kingdom and France.
