Pakistan to Leverage Advanced Technology to Safeguard Sovereignty: Shehbaz Sharif

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Wednesday reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to utilizing advanced technologies to strengthen national security and safeguard its sovereignty, emphasizing that innovation in robotics and autonomous systems would play a vital role in the country’s future development.

Addressing the inaugural ceremony of the Indus RAS – Robotics and Autonomous Systems Expo 2026 in Islamabad, the prime minister said Pakistan had achieved significant progress in emerging technologies, noting that more than 60 percent of the country’s drone production is now being carried out domestically. He described the growing use of technology in the security sector as a matter of national pride.

Shehbaz Sharif said advancements in robotics, drones, and autonomous systems would contribute to strengthening the economy, enhancing national security, and improving the quality of life for citizens. He added that the government would introduce a comprehensive legislative and ethical framework to regulate the development and use of autonomous technologies.

Referring to Pakistan’s defense capabilities, the prime minister said the armed forces had effectively employed autonomous systems and cyber security measures to protect the country’s borders. He commended the military leadership, including Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, for embracing modern technologies to enhance national defense.

To promote technological innovation, the prime minister announced the launch of the SPARK and Elevate Programme, aimed at supporting research and the development of world-class technologies in Pakistan. He said the initiative would encourage entrepreneurship, stimulate innovation, and create new employment opportunities for young professionals.

Shehbaz Sharif also announced the establishment of a $20 million Pakistan Venture Fund to support technology-driven startups and innovation-led enterprises, underscoring the government’s commitment to fostering a robust national innovation ecosystem.

The ceremony was attended by Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, senior military officials, federal ministers, and representatives from academia, industry, and the technology sector.
