South Korean President Reaffirms US Alliance Amid Trump’s Decision to Scale Back Joint Military Exercises

SEOUL: South Korean President Lee Jae Myung has reaffirmed the importance of the country’s military alliance with the United States, saying a strong partnership with Washington remains essential to strengthening national security amid growing concerns over regional stability.

Speaking at a Cabinet meeting, President Lee stressed that South Korea’s security would be further strengthened by maintaining a solid alliance with the United States. He also called for greater efforts to enhance South Korea’s own defense capabilities and strategic value as a key U.S. ally.

Lee’s remarks came after U.S. President Donald Trump ordered the Pentagon to significantly scale back annual joint military exercises with South Korea. The decision has caused concern in Seoul because the exercises are considered an important component of military readiness and deterrence against North Korea.

Trump cited several reasons for the decision, including South Korea’s refusal to support U.S. military action against Iran, the cost of the exercises and his stated positive relationship with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. The move has raised questions in South Korea about the future strength and reliability of the decades-old security alliance.

The joint exercises, known as Ulchi Freedom Shield, began as scheduled but are being reduced in scope following Trump’s directive. The annual drills are designed to strengthen combined military readiness and improve the allies’ ability to respond to potential threats from North Korea.

North Korea has consistently condemned the U.S.-South Korean exercises as provocative military preparations and has warned of a strong response. Pyongyang’s opposition comes as it continues to expand its nuclear and missile capabilities and strengthen strategic ties with Russia and China.

President Lee’s emphasis on the U.S. alliance reflects Seoul’s efforts to maintain close security cooperation with Washington while also strengthening its independent defense capabilities. Analysts and officials have expressed concern that any weakening of joint military preparedness could affect deterrence on the Korean Peninsula and raise broader questions about regional security.

Despite the uncertainty surrounding the scale of future exercises, Seoul has continued to emphasize the strategic importance of the U.S.-South Korean partnership in addressing security challenges posed by North Korea and maintaining stability in Northeast Asia.
