LIVERPOOL — British Prime Minister Andy Burnham and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney have discussed the opportunities and challenges posed by artificial intelligence, stressing the need for closer cooperation between governments and the technology sector to address emerging risks and strengthen online safety.
The two leaders held their first bilateral meeting on Wednesday, with artificial intelligence and digital safety among the key issues discussed. Downing Street said both sides recognized the importance of cooperation between governments and technology companies in responding to shared challenges arising from rapidly developing AI technologies.
The discussions also covered wider cooperation in defence and security. Britain and Canada are working together through emerging multilateral defence initiatives, while Ottawa has formally applied to join the UK-led Joint Expeditionary Force, according to a statement from Carney’s office.
Canada is also participating as an observer in the Global Combat Air Programme, a multinational initiative involving the UK, Italy and Japan to develop a next-generation fighter aircraft. The involvement reflects growing interest in closer defence-industrial and technological cooperation between Britain and Canada.
The leaders also discussed the Canada-led Defence Security Resilience Bank, an initiative intended to strengthen financing for defence and security projects. Britain has been working more closely with Canada on the initiative, which has faced challenges in attracting broader support from major European countries.
The meeting took place as both countries seek to deepen their economic and security relationships with European partners. Canada has been pursuing closer ties with Europe in areas including trade, defence and strategic industries, while the UK government has also emphasized stronger cooperation with European allies.
Artificial intelligence has become an increasingly important issue for governments as the technology develops rapidly across areas including communications, industry, defence and public services. The discussions between Burnham and Carney highlighted the importance of balancing technological opportunities with measures to address online safety and other shared concerns.
The talks also underscored the broader expansion of UK-Canada cooperation beyond traditional bilateral relations, with both governments exploring joint approaches to emerging technologies, defence capabilities and international security.
The meeting marked an early step in the two countries’ efforts to coordinate policies on artificial intelligence and security while strengthening cooperation across trade, technology and defence.
