UK Eurovision Record to Face Parliamentary Scrutiny

LONDON: The United Kingdom’s recent performance in the Eurovision Song Contest is set to come under scrutiny by a House of Commons committee, with MPs expected to question BBC officials and music industry experts about the country’s selection process and repeated poor results.

Dame Caroline Dinenage, chair of the Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Committee, said the inquiry would examine how the UK’s Eurovision representative is selected and whether recent results have been affected by song choices, performances or other factors.

The UK has historically enjoyed considerable success in the competition. Before 2000, it finished in the top 10 in every year except 1978, 1987 and 1999, and won the contest in 1997 with Katrina and the Waves’ “Love Shine a Light.”

Since 2000, however, the UK has reached the top 10 only three times and has finished last on six occasions — in 2003, 2008, 2010, 2019, 2021 and 2026. Sam Ryder provided a notable result in 2022, finishing second with “Space Man.”

The BBC selects the UK’s Eurovision entry with support from a record label or music management company. The parliamentary committee is expected to hear evidence from BBC executives and music industry specialists in the coming months.

In the 2026 contest, Bulgaria’s Dara won with “Bangaranga,” securing the country’s first Eurovision victory. The UK finished last with Sam Battle, known professionally as Look Mum No Computer, whose entry “Eins, Zwei, Drei” received no points from the public vote.

The 2026 Eurovision contest also faced wider political controversy, including boycotts by several participating countries over Israel’s involvement amid the Gaza conflict.
