LONDON: UK Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood has warned anti-asylum activist Daniel Thomas that he and his organisation will face the “full force of the law” if they commit offences during protests near contested asylum accommodation sites.
Mahmood described Thomas, co-founder of the Patriot Platform, as a far-right activist and accused him of exploiting local concerns over asylum accommodation to create divisions within communities. Her comments followed statements by Thomas that thousands of masked supporters could gather for several days in Piddington, Oxfordshire, to prevent male asylum seekers from being housed at a former defence site.
The Home Secretary said the government recognised concerns among residents about the proposed asylum facility but stressed the distinction between legitimate community concerns and unlawful activity.
Piddington residents recently voted 285 to 26 in a symbolic ballot opposing the proposed asylum accommodation. Thomas subsequently visited the village and the site where asylum seekers are expected to be housed.
Mahmood also sought to reassure local residents that the facility would be largely self-contained, with services for asylum seekers provided on site. She said the government’s experience at other large accommodation centres indicated that this approach could limit pressure on surrounding communities.
Thomas, who is known as “Danny Tommo” and has previously been convicted in a kidnapping-related case, has rejected accusations of racism and said his organisation does not accept racism within its ranks.
The Home Secretary’s remarks came as the UK government continued efforts to address recent anti-migrant protests and strengthen policing measures around demonstrations, including the use of intelligence and legal powers to deal with criminal offences.
