LONDON: British ministers are set to brief defence companies and providers of critical national infrastructure on the security threats posed by Russia, amid growing concerns over possible sabotage operations and cyberattacks, the UK government said on Friday.
Security Minister Dan Jarvis will brief industry bodies representing providers of critical national infrastructure, while Armed Forces Minister Louise Sandher-Jones is scheduled to meet representatives of defence companies.
The Cabinet Office said Russia poses an “enduring and significant threat” to the United Kingdom and its interests around the world. The government’s engagement with industry is intended to strengthen awareness of potential hostile activities and improve preparedness across critical sectors.
The move comes amid heightened concern among European governments over sabotage, cyberattacks and other forms of activity attributed to or suspected of being linked to Russia.
British Prime Minister Andy Burnham recently accused Russia of using various means to spread disinformation. Moscow rejected the allegation, saying such statements contribute to anti-Russian sentiment.
The UK government has also been working with private-sector operators to strengthen protection of critical national infrastructure, with officials examining infrastructure vulnerabilities and the potential impact of hostile activity during a crisis or conflict.
The latest ministerial briefings are part of broader efforts to enhance cooperation between the government, defence industry and critical infrastructure providers in responding to emerging security threats.
