Ukraine Claims Major Territorial Gains as Frontline Momentum Shows Signs of Shift

Kyiv: Ukraine’s top military commander has said that Ukrainian forces have recaptured more than 600 square kilometres of territory so far this year, marking what appears to be a shift in battlefield momentum after years of gradual Russian advances.

General Oleksandr Syrskyi said on Monday that Ukrainian troops reclaimed an additional 100 square kilometres in May alone compared with territory lost during the same period. He shared the update on the Telegram messaging app, describing ongoing operations across multiple fronts.

President Volodymyr Zelenskiy had previously stated that Ukraine had regained around 600 square kilometres in 2026, although independent verification of battlefield claims remains difficult.

Reuters noted that it was not able to independently confirm the figures. Due to widespread drone warfare and the creation of heavily contested “kill zones” along the front lines, establishing precise territorial control has become increasingly challenging.

However, independent monitoring groups that track the war have also reported a slowdown in Russian territorial advances in recent months, with some indicating limited Ukrainian counter-gains following a prolonged period of Russian incremental progress since the unsuccessful Ukrainian counter-offensive in 2023.

Despite these developments, Syrskyi cautioned that Russian forces continue to push in eastern and southern Ukraine. He said the number of daily combat engagements has increased significantly, describing the frontline situation as “difficult and dynamic.”

Military analysts continue to characterize the situation as fluid, with both sides sustaining pressure across multiple sectors of the front while neither achieving decisive breakthroughs.
