Inflation in the Netherlands Rises Sharply in May, Exceeding Forecasts

THE HAGUE: Inflation in the Netherlands accelerated more than expected in May, according to preliminary data released by the national statistics office, signaling renewed price pressures across the economy.

Consumer prices rose 3.5% year-on-year in May, up from 2.8% in April, and exceeding analysts’ expectations of a 3.0% increase, according to Bloomberg estimates.

On a harmonized basis used for European Union comparisons, inflation climbed to 3.4% in May, compared with 2.5% in April. Economists had forecast a smaller rise to around 3.1%.

The figures indicate a broad-based acceleration in price growth, both under the national consumer price index and the EU-harmonized measure, suggesting that inflationary pressures remain persistent despite earlier signs of moderation.
