England Fast Bowler Brydon Carse Detained by Police After Nightclub Incident

DERBY — England fast bowler Brydon Carse was detained by police following an incident at a nightclub in Derby, with authorities investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Carse, 31, was reportedly seen being escorted from the nightclub by police officers in handcuffs and taken to a police station. His Durham teammate Matthew Potts was also present at the venue at the time.

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) confirmed that it was aware of an incident in Derby on Sunday night and said an investigation was under way. The board said it would provide further information when it became available.

Carse and Potts had represented Durham in their County Championship Division Two match against Derbyshire in Derby. Durham secured a comprehensive 338-run victory in the fixture.

Carse has played 14 Test matches for England and was one of the team’s leading performers during the 2025-26 Ashes series, taking 22 wickets. He was also included in England’s squad for the first two Tests of the ongoing three-match series against Pakistan, although he was not selected for the opening Test in Leeds, which Pakistan won by an innings and 103 runs.

The second Test between England and Pakistan is scheduled to begin at Lord’s on Thursday.

It remains unclear what led to the incident at the nightclub, and no official details have been released regarding the circumstances that resulted in Carse’s detention. Accordingly, no conclusions can be drawn about the player’s conduct while the investigation is ongoing.

The incident comes after England Test captain Joe Root announced last week that the team would no longer operate a formal curfew for players going out at night. A curfew had previously been introduced following incidents during England’s tours of New Zealand and Australia earlier this year.

Root said the players were adults and should be expected to take responsibility for their behaviour away from the cricket field, while team management would continue to monitor conduct.

The latest incident could renew scrutiny of England’s approach to player discipline and off-field conduct as the team prepares for the remainder of the Test series against Pakistan.
