Gordon Brown Predicts Northern Ireland Will Eventually Join a United Ireland

LONDON: Former British Prime Minister Gordon Brown has said he believes Ireland will ultimately become united, predicting that Northern Ireland will leave the United Kingdom in the long term while stressing that any constitutional change must be determined through democratic consent.

Brown, who played a prominent role in the Northern Ireland peace process, said the prospect of Irish reunification was different from the question of Scottish independence. While he expects Northern Ireland to move towards unity with the Republic of Ireland, he remains opposed to Scottish independence and supports Scotland remaining part of the United Kingdom.

His comments come against the backdrop of continuing debate over Northern Ireland’s constitutional future and the provisions of the Good Friday Agreement, which established that any change in Northern Ireland’s constitutional status must reflect the consent of its people.

Brown’s remarks underline his view that the political and constitutional future of the UK will continue to evolve, while emphasizing the importance of democratic processes in determining the status of Northern Ireland.

The former prime minister made the comments in an interview connected with the publication of his new book, The Future Starts With Us, in which he also discussed the future of Britain, the Labour Party and wider political and economic challenges facing the country.
