JD Sports Appoints Former IKEA CEO Peter Agnefjäll as New Chair

LONDON — British sportswear retailer JD Sports has appointed former IKEA chief executive Peter Agnefjäll as its new chair, with the Swedish business executive set to take up the position on September 1, 2026.

Agnefjäll will succeed Darren Shapland, who has been serving as interim chair following the unexpected departure of former chairman Andrew Higginson in July. Shapland will remain on JD Sports’ board as an independent non-executive director.

Agnefjäll brings extensive international retail and corporate leadership experience to the role. He served as chief executive of IKEA from 2013 to 2017 and subsequently chaired Ahold Delhaize, one of Europe’s largest supermarket groups. His experience across major global consumer businesses is expected to support JD Sports as it pursues its growth strategy and explores new opportunities.

Commenting on the appointment, Shapland said Agnefjäll’s experience and leadership background would be valuable to JD Sports as the company continues to implement its strategic priorities.

The appointment comes at an important stage for JD Sports, which has expanded its international presence and operates a large network of sportswear stores across multiple markets. The company has increasingly focused on strengthening its position in the global sports-fashion sector while responding to changing consumer preferences and competition in the retail industry.

Agnefjäll’s appointment also provides continuity following recent changes at the top of the company. His previous senior roles at IKEA and Ahold Delhaize give him experience overseeing large international organizations and navigating complex consumer markets.

JD Sports said the appointment will take effect on September 1, marking the beginning of a new phase of leadership for the British retailer.
