Israel Accelerates Construction of Massive Barrier Inside Gaza, Raising Fears of Permanent Territorial Division

CAIRO: Israel is rapidly constructing a miles-long earthen barrier inside the Gaza Strip, reinforcing its control over more than half of the enclave and intensifying concerns that a temporary ceasefire boundary could evolve into a permanent territorial division.

According to satellite imagery and military officials, the barrier stretches along the so-called “Yellow Line,” a demarcation established under the ceasefire agreement. More than 23 kilometers of the embankment have already been completed, with construction continuing around key areas including Rafah and Khan Younis.

The Israeli military confirmed that the project is intended to strengthen security and prevent infiltration, stating that the barrier forms part of a broader security zone equipped with surveillance infrastructure. Israeli authorities maintain that the measure is necessary to protect national security amid ongoing tensions.

The construction has heightened concerns among Palestinians and humanitarian observers, who fear that the barrier could formalize Israel’s long-term control over large sections of Gaza. Vast areas east of the line have reportedly been depopulated and heavily damaged during the conflict, while much of the displaced Palestinian population remains concentrated in crowded coastal areas west of the barrier, relying heavily on humanitarian assistance.

The barrier’s expansion comes despite a ceasefire agreement that envisages the eventual withdrawal of Israeli forces and the deployment of an international stabilization mechanism. However, implementation of the agreement has stalled amid continued violence and mutual accusations of violations. Recent hostilities have resulted in additional casualties on both sides, further complicating efforts to advance the peace process.

The conflict traces its origins to the Hamas-led attack on Israel in October 2023, which triggered a prolonged Israeli military campaign in Gaza. Since then, the humanitarian situation in the territory has deteriorated significantly, with international organizations repeatedly calling for sustained ceasefire implementation, expanded humanitarian access, and renewed diplomatic efforts toward a lasting resolution.
